Online discussion forums, if well-structured, can serve as valuable sources for extracting requirements-related information that can enhance both current and future software through the requirements engineering process. This study addresses the current lack of approaches for extracting such information by proposing an automated method using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). The authors analyzed 3,319 user comments from seven Reddit discussion topics. Using content analysis, they investigated the frequency of requirements-related information submitted by end-users across each topic. They also developed an automated approach to identify key stakeholders who frequently contribute their rationales in forum discussions. Furthermore, they applied various ML algorithms to classify user comments into different types of rationale elements. The results indicate that online forums, like Reddit, are rich sources for requirements elicitation, and that ML is effective in detecting user rationales and identifying various requirements modeling elements.
