This article explores the biographies and motivations of participants in two Senior Citizens Forums in South East England, focusing on their self-perception relative to other older people and their relationships with their local communities. It critiques the characterization of forum members as "usual suspects" whose legitimacy is often questioned, and highlights the importance of place in the lives of older individuals. Despite the geographic proximity of the forums, significant cultural differences in motivations and backgrounds were found, revealing that participation often involves those with greater social and cultural capital, challenging the notion that such spaces solely serve self-interest.
