This study evaluates the use of online self-help forums by patients with bipolar disorder, their relatives, and treating professionals. Analyzing 2,400 postings qualitatively and quantitatively, it identifies key self-help mechanisms, including disclosure, friendship, and group cohesion. The main topics discussed are social networks, symptoms, and medication. Factor analysis reveals three self-help mechanisms—group cohesion, emotional support, and information exchange—and three fields of interest: illness-related, social, and financial/legal issues. The findings highlight the importance of emotional sharing and social networking for coping with bipolar disorder, suggesting that psycho-educational programs should focus on these aspects.
