This longitudinal study evaluated the interaction and interpersonal content in messages posted by online graduate students in small group asynchronous forums. It also assessed the relationship between interpersonality and interactivity using a newly developed coding scheme. The results suggest that fostering interpersonality leads to increased participation and deeper discussions, thereby facilitating collective knowledge building. Regulating interaction complexity and promoting cohesive group dynamics through interpersonal exchanges can result in more controlled interactive behavior and improved collective learning.
