This paper presents a comparative analysis of forums and wikis as tools for online collaborative learning, based on data from a five-week asynchronous e-learning activity. The research method included quantitative and qualitative analyses. The quantitative analysis used a coding scheme with indicators such as inferencing, producing, developing, evaluating, summarizing, organizing, and supporting. The qualitative analysis involved an open-ended questionnaire on participants' perspectives. Results showed that forums facilitated processes like inferencing, evaluating, organizing, and supporting, while wikis mainly involved producing and developing. Forums were better for discussions and idea sharing, whereas wikis were suited for developing collaborative documents. Both tools have unique strengths and can complement each other in supporting students' self-regulated learning strategies. The findings emphasize the need for careful tool selection in designing collaborative virtual courses.
