This paper explores the development of online communities at Ultralab for students in masters-level programs, doctoral research, and continuing professional learning. It examines factors influencing learner engagement and participation, including perception of purpose, identity, trust, learning activities, facilitator interventions, and information architecture. The concept of engagement in higher education online communities is discussed, with a focus on the community's purpose of practitioner-based inquiry or research, referred to as a "community of inquiry."
