This paper examines how everyday gendered experiences shape participation in massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) and their community forums. A case study of debates on World of Warcraft (WoW) forums about the character Ji Firepaw, who initially used gendered and sexist dialogue, highlights how game communities are influenced by broader cultural contexts. Discussions on both official and unofficial WoW forums reveal recurring themes such as the feminist as killjoy, anxious masculinity, and player agency, which reinforce gendered power dynamics. The study illustrates that MMOGs and their online environments are not isolated but are interwoven with everyday gender norms, with feminists and feminism perceived as threats to these virtual spaces and the enjoyment of shared gender and sex role values.
