This study explores the impact of linguistic politeness in online discussion groups through an inductive approach, aiming to model politeness automatically and assess its effects on reply rates. Analyzing different communities, the research reveals that while politeness tends to increase reply rates in technical groups, surprisingly, rudeness may be more effective in certain political groups. These findings, adjusted for group responsiveness norms and message length, help validate theoretical politeness strategies and lay the groundwork for developing a machine learning-based "politeness checker." This tool could assist newcomers in crafting messages that are more likely to receive responses in specific communities or help moderators identify rudeness.
