This paper explores the impact of moderation within reputation systems on online communities, focusing on how moderation can incentivize commentators to produce quality content amidst the challenge of anonymity. It introduces the concept of reputation oscillation, where commentators cyclically generate useful content to gain high reputation, then exploit it, leading to a phenomenon known as reverse reputation—where high-reputation users may offer less value than those with lower reputations. The study suggests that optimal moderation, with frequency properly adjusted, can enhance information quality and community performance by addressing reverse reputation issues.
