This qualitative study explores motivators for participation in enterprise online communities among a group of very active employee members termed "informal leaders." Unlike prior findings from internet communities, these employees were primarily motivated by a desire to help other members, particularly in communities related to their job. In contrast, they did not seem motivated by the need to develop their reputation or connect with others. These findings offer new insights into participation dynamics within enterprise online communities.
