This study examines the behavior of software engineers on Q&A forums like Stack Overflow and MSDN, revealing that both askers and answerers conduct extensive online research before posting. While including citations to these resources enhances the quality of forum contributions, authors often neglect to do so. In response, the researchers developed CiteHistory, a browser plugin that facilitates the inclusion of relevant search queries and URLs as bibliographic references in forum posts. A two-week deployment with professional software engineers showed that CiteHistory significantly increased reference inclusion and provided additional benefits as a personal research tracker.
