Altruistic behaviors exhibited by disaster survivors and bystanders are well-documented, leading to the evolution of government-sponsored crisis planning to include affiliated volunteer agencies. Acknowledging the importance of unaffiliated or spontaneous volunteers, agencies must adapt to new ways volunteers can contribute, facilitated by social media and online communities. Public service agencies should explore emerging platforms and understand their role in disaster response, leveraging established methods to integrate virtual volunteer programs into post-disaster operations.
