This paper presents a typology for online communities of practice, developed through observations and content analysis of messages from three electronic discussion lists for university webmasters, librarians, and educators, alongside a literature review. It expands upon existing typologies by including open online communities of practice outside of organizational contexts. This new typology allows for a detailed analysis of various aspects of these communities, offering insights into supporting the development and implementation of effective online communities of practice for distinct purposes.
