This study examines students' cognitive engagement in e-learning environments through content analysis of 267 forum posts from a semester-long course. The findings indicate that nearly half of the posts lacked explanations, highlighting a low level of cognitive engagement among students. Additionally, many posts contributed minimally to cognitive depth. The analysis revealed no significant relationship between students' gender and their level of cognitive engagement. The study discusses its limitations and implications for improving student learning in online discussion forums.
