This article delves into the online discourse surrounding Genshin Impact (GI), a mobile game blending Chinese and Japanese cultural elements, to explore its representation of "authentic Chineseness" and its role as a cultural export. Through two years of online ethnography, it uncovers how players debate the game's portrayal of Chinese culture, its narrative of "the China story," and its political correctness. This study contributes to de-westernizing cultural studies by revealing the complex construction of cultural authenticity in a Global South context, where power dynamics among China, Japan, and the West shape perceptions. It highlights the relational nature of cultural authenticity and its ties to global soft power competition, advocating for a move beyond dichotomous thinking in cultural studies.
