This article examines the use of online discussion forums at Northern Arizona University (NAU) through the tool Screen Porch, integrated into both online and face-to-face courses since the early 90s. Screen Porch supports multimedia, enhancing traditional text-based discussions. The author argues for thoughtful integration of technology based on pedagogical principles rather than as an add-on. The qualitative analysis discusses how well-designed web courses with discussion forums can enhance student learning, promote involvement, and provide feedback opportunities. Drawing from three years of teaching experience and program administration, the author shares insights and lessons learned from using discussion forums in graduate-level teacher education courses.
