Milgram's small world experiment is a seminal research study in social psychology that investigates the extent to which people in a large social network are interconnected with one another. The study found that participants could send a message to a target person through an average of six intermediate contacts, leading to the concept of six degrees of separation. The study has important implications for understanding how information, influence, and disease can spread through social networks. The concept of six degrees of separation has since become a popular phrase and has been used in various fields of research, including social networks, epidemiology, and graph theory.
