This chapter explores the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to examine student interactions in discussion forums within Course Management Systems (CMS). By introducing various metrics for ranking and determining roles, and employing clustering and temporal analysis techniques, the study investigates student communications, group formations, role changes, and the content of exchanged messages. This approach offers instructors enhanced methods for assessing student participation by identifying participant roles, dynamically visualizing interactions and group formations, presenting a hierarchy of discussed topics, and tracking the evolution and growth of patterns and roles over time. The applicability of these analyses is demonstrated through several case studies.
