This chapter explores the concept of "leading from behind" borrowed from group analytic theory and its relevance in large online Communities of Practice (CoPs). While traditional leadership may involve being in front, trusting the group is crucial in online CoPs. However, developing this trust is challenging for leaders accustomed to structured teams. Drawing from an empirical analysis of leadership in an online CoP, the chapter outlines principles supporting the "leading from behind" approach and offers insights on how managers can foster trusting relationships for effective knowledge sharing and innovation.
