This study delves into how the type of online community host (consumer-hosted vs. company-hosted) influences the relationship between motivational drivers and content contribution. Through an extensive literature review and an empirical study involving over 800 members from three online communities, the research identifies four main motivational drivers: opinion leadership, self-presentation, enjoyment, and altruism. Findings suggest that opinion leadership, self-presentation, and enjoyment encourage content contribution, while altruism surprisingly has a negative impact. Notably, these motivational drivers exert a stronger influence in company-hosted communities than in consumer-hosted ones. The study recommends that to boost content contribution, community managers should focus on attracting opinion leaders, fostering opportunities for self-presentation, and enhancing the enjoyment of community participation. Additionally, a qualitative analysis explores the unexpected negative effect of altruism on content contribution, offering rich insights for both theoretical and practical applications in online community management.
