This paper examines the impact of online discussion forums on student learning outcomes and interaction patterns within virtual learning environments. It investigates the implications of the mediated nature of computer-based interactions on learning. The study's findings suggest that the typical nonlinear branching structure of online discussions may not fully support conversational modes of learning. The paper discusses the implications of these findings for enhancing student learning in online forums.
