This study explores the role of social relations in online group learning among university students using discussion forums. By analyzing social networks formed during discussions focused on higher-order learning tasks—such as case study analysis, website evaluation, and WebQuest creation—the research reveals that as the complexity of tasks increases, so does the necessity for social interaction. The findings indicate that the social structure of groups is influenced by the type of learning task, highlighting the interconnected nature of learning and social engagement. The educational implications of these results are discussed.
