This paper explores the impact of students' cognitively relevant behaviors in MOOC discussion forums on their learning gains. While previous research has focused on dropout rates, this study utilizes content analysis and a computational model to evaluate the relationship between the quantity and quality of student participation and their cognitive processes. Significant associations were identified, highlighting the importance of discourse behavior for learning in MOOCs. The findings have both theoretical and practical implications for enhancing online education.
