Because all forums have one thing in common, be it IPS, XF or vB... not only do they look bad on mobile, but also the handling leaves a lot to be desired. They are designed for use on the desktop and a PWA can not keep up with a "real" app, but that's another story.

It's estimated that mobile use globally surpassed desktop use as far back as 2019.

  • 60% of website traffic worldwide comes from mobile devices.

  • 51% of website traffic in the United States comes from mobile technology.

  • 83% of social media interactions in North America occur through mobile technology

Some questions:

  • Do you think your community is mobile optimized? This means fast page speed, responsive design, good readiability and appropriately-sized text, good UI, mobile navigation, non-cluttered website desk.
  • What would you improve on mobile?

I was especially surprised at the outlier regarding social media.  My hypothesis is that users conduct 'deep research' on desktop, and 'shallow' conversations on mobile.

Online communities should take advantage of increasing mobile users by using responsive design or even providing app based platform
