🤔 Thought of the Day: You Need to Dumb Down Your Community Design

Recommended Posts

There's a learning model being adopted by the largest organizations that incorporate education, exposure, and experience.  It proposes a learning model of something like:

  • 10% of learning from education and formal instruction
  • 20% of learning from exposure and learning from others.
  • 70% of learning from experience and learning 'on the job' through real-life experiences and tasks

Could contain: Number, Symbol, Text

While this model works well for job, it's a terrible model when applied to community design:

  • Most communities don't come with a 'manual' or help files anymore.  So 10% of formal instruction is gone.
  • The onboarding experience is very individual, so there are no exposure to peers, at least in the beginning. So 20% of learning is gone.

What this means is that users are left to their own to figure out where to go and where to click.
