  • Anchoring Bias

Aliases: anchor effect, starting point bias, reference dependence, fixation bias, initial impression influence.

Anchoring bias is the cognitive tendency to overly rely on the first piece of information encountered when making decisions or forming opinions. In online communities, this bias can skew discussions, particularly in forums where early posts or comments are prominently displayed. For instance, an initial opinion on a controversial topic may disproportionately influence subsequent contributions, leading to a one-sided narrative.

To foster balanced discussions, community managers can implement strategies like randomized sorting of comments, surfacing diverse viewpoints, or encouraging members to critically evaluate multiple perspectives. By mitigating the influence of initial inputs, forums can cultivate a culture of thoughtful and open dialogue, ensuring that all voices are heard.

On a technology forum, a user posts early about a new smartphone’s alleged overheating issue. Anchoring bias causes this opinion to dominate the thread, even though later comments clarify that the problem is rare. A moderator might intervene by adding an official response or summarizing verified information at the top, reducing undue influence from the initial claim.
