  • Authority Bias

Aliases: authority influence, hierarchical bias, expert bias, power-based validation, leadership preference.

Authority bias is a cognitive tendency to place undue trust in the views, decisions, or advice of perceived authority figures. In online communities, this bias can lead to uncritical acceptance of information provided by moderators, influencers, or experts, even when contradictory evidence exists. While trust in expertise is often beneficial, excessive reliance on authority can stifle critical thinking and diverse perspectives.

Community managers can address authority bias by encouraging members to question information, regardless of its source, and fostering an environment where all contributions are evaluated on their merit. Providing transparent explanations for decisions or advice can also reduce over-reliance on authority figures.

In a tech forum, users may unquestioningly adopt a moderator’s software recommendation without considering alternatives. By promoting open discussions and inviting diverse opinions, moderators can help ensure more balanced and well-rounded community decisions.
