  • Egocentric Bias

Aliases: self-centered bias, self-focus, personal bias, egocentrism, self-perception bias.

Egocentric bias is the tendency to focus disproportionately on one's perspective, often underestimating the contributions or experiences of others. In online forums, this bias can manifest as users believing their opinions are more critical to the discussion than they actually are. This behavior might lead to skewed discussions, where dominant voices overshadow diverse perspectives.

To foster a balanced community, moderators and administrators can implement tools that promote equal participation, such as rotating featured contributors or gamifying balanced dialogue. Additionally, guiding conversations through inclusive prompts or structured debates ensures that all members feel valued, counteracting egocentric tendencies and building a more collaborative environment.

A user in a gaming forum starts a thread discussing their unique strategy, claiming it's the best approach and dismissing others' input. This egocentric bias could alienate contributors and stifle innovation. A moderator might step in, encouraging the user to explain their strategy while inviting others to share alternative ideas, fostering a more inclusive and constructive conversation.
