Aliases: argument by assertion, appeal to authority, dogmatic statement

The "Ipse Dixit" fallacy, or argument by assertion, relies on the idea that a statement is true simply because an authority figure or expert claims it is, without supporting evidence. In online communities, this can appear as users citing authority figures to dismiss differing opinions or discourage critical analysis. While expertise can enrich discussions, blindly accepting statements without question stifles meaningful engagement and limits the diversity of ideas.

To foster a healthy online forum, moderators and community leaders should encourage members to ask for evidence and engage in thoughtful discourse. This approach promotes critical thinking and ensures that discussions are based on well-rounded arguments rather than unexamined assertions.

In an online debate about climate change policies, a user claims that a particular solution is the best because "a renowned scientist said so." Without explaining the scientist's reasoning or providing evidence, the discussion halts, as participants hesitate to challenge an "expert opinion." Moderators can step in to encourage users to provide links, data, or reasoning to substantiate such claims, ensuring the conversation stays evidence-based and productive.
