  • Reactance

Aliases: autonomy resistance, freedom backlash, defiance bias, authority pushback, control aversion.

Reactance is a cognitive bias where individuals resist or defy rules, suggestions, or perceived attempts to limit their freedom. In online communities, this can manifest as users pushing back against new guidelines, moderation actions, or even collective decisions that feel restrictive. While it stems from a desire for autonomy, unchecked reactance can lead to unnecessary conflict or non-compliance.

Community managers can address reactance by involving members in decision-making processes and clearly communicating the rationale behind rules or changes. Fostering a collaborative environment where users feel their autonomy is respected helps reduce defiance and encourages constructive engagement.

In a gaming forum, users might rebel against a new rule limiting the posting of spoilers. Moderators can mitigate this by explaining the rule’s purpose (e.g., improving user experience) and seeking feedback to refine its implementation collaboratively.
