  • Status Quo Bias

Aliases: resistance to change, default preference, familiarity bias, change aversion, inertia bias.

Status quo bias is a cognitive tendency where people resist change and favor familiar options over newer, possibly more advantageous choices. In online communities, this bias often appears in debates about adopting new tools, updating practices, or revising long-standing policies. While comfort in the familiar can bring stability, it may hinder progress and innovation.

Community managers can address status quo bias by gradually introducing changes, clearly explaining their benefits, and involving community members in the decision-making process. Highlighting examples where past changes led to positive outcomes can also help overcome resistance.

In a forum about technology, users might resist switching from an old, less efficient software to a newer version due to familiarity. Moderators can share testimonials and tutorials to demonstrate the advantages of the new software, easing the transition.
