This paper investigates adult engagement in Online Communities of Practice (OCOPs) through the lens of social cognitive theory, focusing on how environmental, personal, and behavioral factors influence participation. Conducting twenty-one interviews with GitHub members, the study highlights that adult learning in OCOPs is project-based, driven by mutual interests, and a willingness to assist others. Findings suggest that engagement in these communities not only fulfills intrinsic motivations and expected outcomes but also significantly contributes to lifelong learning achievements, including professional development and recognition. A revised framework for understanding adult engagement in OCOPs is proposed, emphasizing the principles of adult learning that advocate for self-directed and autonomous learning within facilitative environments.
