This chapter addresses the challenges and dynamics of online communities in the era of social networking services, which have shifted the control of content access from system operators (sysops) to individual users. With the growth of social networking, issues like trolling and lurking have become prevalent, affecting community engagement and participation. The chapter introduces the Gamified Flow of Persuasion model, an innovative approach that leverages ecological cognition, the participation continuum, and gamification principles. This model aims to enhance online community engagement by effectively managing common problems such as lurking (non-participation), trolling (posting inflammatory content), and defriending (blocking users), thereby fostering a more positive and interactive online environment.
