This study focuses on superusers within online health communities (OHCs), particularly in the Asthma UK OHC, aiming to understand their motivations, challenges, and interactions with healthcare professionals (HCPs). Superusers, often patients or carers themselves, are motivated by a desire to learn, share knowledge, and help others, rather than financial or social recognition. Despite facing challenges such as dealing with misinformation and the boundary of their advice, they play a crucial role in sustaining community engagement. The study suggests that superusers' involvement in OHCs fulfills their psychosocial needs and calls for further research on their unmet needs, interactions with HCPs, and the integration of OHCs into traditional healthcare.
