This paper investigates the characteristics of popular Internet of Things (IoT) projects on Hackster.io, a major online IoT community, by analyzing over 18,000 projects. It focuses on three key popularity metrics: views count, respects count, and trending scores. Through time-series clustering, the study tracks the evolution of these popularity facets. Additionally, linear mixed-effect models are utilized to pinpoint factors significantly associated with project popularity. The findings aim to provide actionable insights for both IoT engineers and online IoT communities on how to enhance the visibility and appeal of IoT projects, potentially leading to increased user engagement and business opportunities.
