This study utilizes frame analysis theory from social movements literature to understand how moderators can establish norms in online communities, particularly within two communities focused on recreational drugs. Findings highlight the importance of norm acceptance and norm transience, indicating that consistent and credible expression of norms by moderators promotes community acceptance. However, norms may become transient and be abandoned if they conflict with the community's identity, often within a year or two.
