This research presents two case studies on gender identity collection in surveys from Tumblr and online Fantasy Football, highlighting the varying prevalence of non-binary gender identities. The study emphasizes the importance of acknowledging gender variation to avoid marginalizing non-binary respondents and to deter misuse of surveys by trolls. The findings indicate significant gender differences in participation across both platforms and propose a model for inclusive mixed-methods HCI research that respects and accurately represents gender diversity.
