This research explores how different media capabilities within online communities (OCs) affect user commitment, individual growth, and knowledge contribution by focusing on the role of connectivity (direct user-to-user interactions) and communality (knowledge repositories). A theoretical model based on media synchronicity theory was tested with data from 452 members of a popular OC, revealing that four out of five media capabilities significantly influence both connectivity and communality, which in turn affect task outcomes. Findings highlight that direct user-to-user interaction (connectivity) plays a more crucial role in encouraging knowledge contribution compared to knowledge repositories (communality), underscoring the importance of synchronous communication in OCs.
