This study examines how online communities, particularly an open source software community named Rubinius, manage work interdependencies that cannot be resolved through standard arm's length coordination mechanisms due to emerging or unidentified knowledge dependencies and unaccounted task relationships. Through a theory-generating case study, the research identifies that such "unresolved interdependencies" are managed through routines characterized by two generalized components: direct implementation and knowledge integration. These components address development interdependencies within code and between developers, respectively, highlighting alternative forms of routine variation as key to managing these challenges. The findings offer insights into the organizing principles of online communities and coordination in organization studies.
