This paper employs Callon et al.'s hybrid forums model to analyze the resistance campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Despite initial Congressional support, the bill was defeated through collective efforts of Internet users, online communities, web companies, and digital rights advocacy groups. Utilizing data from Reddit, the paper illustrates how uncertainty was introduced into the narrow economic risk frame of SOPA proponents, along with deploying a program of collective evidence-building labeled as "research in the wild." It concludes with a discussion on the implications of Internet activism for the democratic process.
