This study investigates the combined impact of social capital and national culture on the quality of knowledge shared within online communities. Focusing on two communities from Germany and the Netherlands, the research finds that national culture significantly shapes how social capital—comprising trust, reciprocity, and shared vision—affects the perceived quality of shared knowledge. The results show that reciprocity and shared vision have different impacts on knowledge sharing in these two culturally distinct contexts. This study not only sheds light on the need for a more nuanced approach to managing online communities by considering cultural differences but also enriches the literature by integrating perspectives on social capital and online knowledge sharing, with a special focus on the moderating role of national culture.
