This study integrates computer-mediated discourse analysis and the concept of wakimae to investigate politeness and linguistic styles in Japanese online communities. Analyzing four threads from two BBS websites, it explores the relationship between discussion topics, politeness levels, and community norms. Despite the presence of impoliteness in one community, a strong sense of belonging persists, aligning with Watts' notion of "politic" behavior as contextually appropriate within these digital spaces.
