This study investigates the role of three user innovation communities in promoting sustainability transitions through the exploration and societal integration of sustainable technical solutions. By analyzing internet forum interactions and conducting member interviews, and employing the technological innovation systems framework for analysis, the research reveals the diverse innovation activities within these communities. They range from technology-focused, anonymous networks to broad-based communities influencing policy, public acceptance, and social embeddedness of technologies. The findings suggest that innovation policymakers should acknowledge and leverage the transformative potential of user innovation communities for fostering more sustainable pathways.
