This article explores the use of metatags as a form of community knowledge formation and gatekeeping within digital platforms, focusing on the subReddit KotakuInAction (KiA) as a case study. Despite being a hub of the GamerGate community on Reddit, KiA has avoided bans seen on other aggressive platforms. The study examines the aggressive nature of KiA, participants' use of metatags, and moderation practices. Methodologically, the study analyzes behaviors like linking and tagging frequency, keyword shifts, and tag domination by certain users over time. Findings reveal a hybrid culture blending Chan culture values with localized behavior and shifting topics towards broader complaints about social justice. Additionally, a small group of influencers drives a significant portion of top conversations. The article concludes with implications for understanding and engaging with aggressive online communities, emphasizing the importance of studying meta naming structures.
