This paper reviews 100 online communities to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of 'empathic communities'—online spaces defined by shared empathy among members. Focusing on communities centered around various interests including religion, sports, pets, culture, and science, the analysis particularly highlights that empathic communities tend to emerge around topics requiring patient or emotional support. The comparison aims to understand how these empathic communities differ from or resemble other types of online communities in their structure and dynamics.
