This research investigates the role of open innovation (OI) intermediaries in facilitating knowledge collaboration between organizations and online user communities from a Community of Practice (CoP) perspective. Through an exploratory case study involving an OI intermediary and 18 client organizations, the study identifies three key knowledge boundary management mechanisms – syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic – that intermediaries employ to enable effective knowledge transfer, translation, and transformation. The findings highlight the critical role of the pragmatic mechanism in reinforcing the other two and underscore the necessity for OI intermediaries to focus not only on digital platform development but also on fostering organizational commitment to community engagement.
