This study conducts an empirical analysis of various types of online communities within the enterprise social software system IBM Connections, aiming to understand how community types differ in terms of participation, activity, and user behavior. By examining both micro (user-level) and macro (community-level) characteristics across communities of practice, team communities, technical support communities, etc., the research identifies distinct behavioral patterns among users. Additionally, user questionnaires complement the empirical findings by linking the objectives of users with the characteristics of different community types. This analysis provides community managers with insights into the normality and healthiness of their communities based on type and user needs.
