This paper explores politeness and disagreement in computer-mediated communication (CMC) within two Hong Kong Internet discussion forums. It identifies eleven disagreement strategies, primarily direct and unmitigated, yet generally perceived as polite and appropriate by lay participants. The study employs a 5-point Likert scale to rate these strategies across politeness, appropriateness, and marked behavior, revealing significant correlations among the parameters. Follow-up interviews provide additional insights into the relational dynamics at play.
