This paper examines the role of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) in developing the digital marketplace, particularly for start-up firms, by analyzing the generation of emotional value (E-value) in social media and networking sites (SMNS). Through a case study of a Swedish start-up industrial design company, the research explores how website design and communication strategies influence eWOM, utilizing a formal value theory as a coding scheme. Findings from the analysis of emoticon and value expressions across three e-communication campaigns reveal that emotional expressions, often marked by emoticons, correlate with more concise verbal expressions and quicker response times. These insights into E-value highlight its significance for eWOM and suggest strategies for information management and online community building.
