This paper investigates the interactions of 43 English as a Second Language (ESL) students using an online discussion forum (ODF) to complete a paraphrasing assignment at a Malaysian university. Over 20 days, 161 posts were analyzed, revealing that the interactions encompassed cognitive skills, evaluation, social cues, and invitational form. The study highlights students' self-directed and self-regulated learning within cultural and institutional constraints, offering insights for enhancing ESL teaching by leveraging contemporary online literacy practices.
